Georgia sports for Tuesday, October 30th

The first major trade of baseball’s offseason was made by the Braves and their new general manager Frank Wren. Veteran shortstop Edgar Renteria has been sent to the Detroit Tigers, in return for 2 top prospects. 21-year-old rookie righthanded pitcher Jair Jurrjens comes to Atlanta, along with young 19-year-old centerfielder Gorkys Hernandez. Renteria leaves the Braves after 2 solid seasons. He hit .332 with 12 homers and 57 RBI’s this past season. The money saved in the trade of Renteria and his contract opens up more options for the Braves in reshaping their roster.

Georgia Bulldogs' football coach Mark Richt has sent a letter of apology to the commissioner of the Southeastern Conference, Mike Slive. The letter apologizes for his team's bench-clearing and excessive celebrating penalty in the win over Florida last Saturday. Richt admitted he told his team in practice leading to the game, that in order to manufacture energy, his players should celebrate after scoring the first touchdown to the point of receiving a celebration penalty. Richt in his letter said "I admit this was inappropriate". An official with the SEC says the letter will stand as the conference's statement on the issue, and that no sanctions are planned.

Georgia State has given athletics director Mary McElroy a new 4-year contract. The deal replaces the remaining 2 years on her orignial contract, signed in July of 2005. McElroy in just over 2 years with the Panthers' athletics program has increased fund raising, hired a new men's head basketball coach, and has completed a feasibility study on the possibility of bringing football to Georgia State.

Georgia sports for Thursday, September 20th

The Braves completed a 3-game sweep of the Florida Marlins, winning 5-1 last night in Atlanta. Edgar Renteria had a home run among 3 hits, while Chipper Jones added 2 hits and an RBI. Both Jones and Renteria are in a battle for the National League batting title, hitting in the high 330’s. Mark Teixeira and Andruw Jones also had home runs last night. In was all more than enough to support the pitching of Chuck James, who got the win with 2 hits and no runs allowed in 7 innings. The Braves have won 4-straight overall, and open a 4-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers tonight.

Georgia sports for Thursday, August 23rd

The Braves dropped a 2nd-straight game to the Reds in Cincinnati, falling 4-2 last night. Lance Cormier took the pitching loss, allowing consecutive home runs to Josh Hamilton and Jeff Keppinger in the 4th inning--the Reds scored 2 more runs in the 5th. The Braves' scoring came from solo home runs off the bats of Brian McCann and Andruw Jones. With the loss, the Braves remain 6 games off the pace of the Mets for the lead in the NL-East division. However, Atlanta has now fallen 2 games off the lead for the wild card playoff spot. The Braves and Reds complete their 4-game series tonight.

Braves' shortstop Edgar Renteria has re-injured his right ankle. Renteria had just been activated off the disabled list, after missing 17 games since August 3rd with a sprain. Last night, the team says Renteria "tweaked" the ankle while batting.

College football teams around the state are in the final stages of preseason practice, with openers just over a week away. The same goes for the state's high school teams, with most opening their schedules a week from Friday.

From the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons will continue in life without Michael Vick, playing their 1st home game of 2007 on Monday night. The Falcons will host the Cincinnati Bengals in exhibition inside the Georgia Dome.

Georgia sports for Monday, July 16th

The Braves are on a roll--they completed a 3-game series sweep of the Pirates in Atlanta Sunday with the 5-1 victory.

Buddy Carlyle gave the Braves 8 strong innings on the mound, as he allowed only 4 hits and a run in the outing. After surrendering a 1st inning home run, Carlyle recorded outs against 20 of the next 21 batters he faced.

Offensively, the Braves delivered 12 hits--RBI singles from Edgar Renteria, Jeff Francouer, and Yunel Escobar. Renteria had 4 hits on the day.

The Braves remain a game-and-a-half behind the Mets for first in the NL-East division. Atlanta continues their 10-game homestand tonight with the open of a series against the Reds.
