Georgia sports for Wednesday, May 2nd

The Braves lost to the Phillies for the first time in 5 games this season, after last night’s 6-4 final in Atlanta. The Braves got an early lead on Phillies’ pitcher Cole Hamels-—Chipper Jones a 2-run homer. But Hamels settled down as the game went on.
Braves starting pitcher Mark Redman had yet another rough outing: he allowed 4 runs in the 2nd inning, his record fell to 0-4. Chipper Jones ended up with 2 home runs on the evening.
The Braves send Chuck James to the hill tonight in the series finale.

Georgia native Dennis Dove is getting his chance in the major leagues, albeit under difficult circumstances. He was called up from the minor leagues by the St Louis Cardinals, after the death of pitcher Josh Hancock. Dove was born in Ocilla, and played college ball at Georgia Southern. Dove threw a scoreless inning for St Louis in their loss to Milwaukee Monday.

Jesse Tuggle and Tracy Ham have been elected to the College Football Hall of Fame Divisional Class, which honors players and coaches who did not play major college football. Tuggle played his college ball at Valdosta State, going on to star at linebacker for the Atlanta Falcons in the NFL. Former Georgia Southern quarterback Tracy Ham went on to a career in the Canadian Football league.
