Heating bills money for low-income Georgians

Low income families can get an extra monetary shot-in-the-arm to help pay their heating bills this winter.

Last week, Washington signed-off-on an emergency 450-million dollar package to help needy families offset soaring home heating bills across the nation.

Georgia is ready to hand-out its share of the money through the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. Lynn Sims heads the program for the state’s Department of Human Resources.

"We had already received our annual allocation—we received 21 million. So this is an extra 1.6 million that because of the cold weather, Congress has released to help allay those costs".

Each year, the federally-funded program gives a boost to more than 80-thousand eligible Georgia families within federal poverty guidelines. Qualifying applicants for this emergency funding can get a maximum of 250-dollars.

Individuals can apply for the funds through one of 19 community action agencies that serve their county. Money is given on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Those in need of assistance can call 1-800-869-1150, or go to the website gcaaonline.org to locate the nearest community action agency in their area.
