NE Georgia crisis center to shut down, services continue

The State's first anti-sexual assault organization is shutting down at the end of July. However, social service agencies are banding together to make sure that essential services are still available in Northeast Georgia.

The Sexual Assault Center lost nearly 40 percent of its budget for next year due to funding cuts. According to the Athens Banner-Herald, state and local granting institutions were reluctant to give money to the comprehensive program because it was no longer getting copperation from law enforcement agencies.

So now, non-profit agencies in Northeast Georgia plan to parcel out the center's activities or to create a new successor organization. Project Safe has a 24-hour domestic violence hotline that could be sued by sexual assault victims as well. Adult victims could seek therapy through Family Counseling Services. The Oconee County Sheriff's Office has offered to share its forensic interview specialist.
