New jobs and investment land in south Georgia

50 jobs and an investment of 15-million dollars is on the way to south Georgia, near the Florida border. A plant that will produce wood pellets and chips will be located in Thomas County. Woodlands Alternative Fuels bought a facility formerly owned by Waverly Minerals. Wood pellets will be made for fuel and horse bedding. About 60-percent of the fuel pellets will be made for the export market for use in power plans.

Hands On Georgia wraps up

16,000 volunteers are gearing up for a statewide volunteer day Saturday. It wraps up the weeklong Hands On Georgia community service projects across the state. This weekend's project include fixing homes damaged by the Mother's Day tornadoes in Macon this year, sorting and bagging food at the Thomas County food bank and holding a cookout in Columbus for soldiers returning from Iraq. Last year, Hands on Georgia drew 68,000 volunteers who gave nearly 200,000 hours of community service during the weeklong event.

Officer resigns after shooting fellow officer

The south Georgia police officer involved in the accidental shooting death of a fellow officer has resigned. Ray Bradford voluntarily resigned Friday following the death of Officer Al Suarez.

Bradford was cleaning his service weapon last May at police headquarters in Boston in Thomas County, when the .40-caliber Glock went off. The bullet struck then-assistant chief Suarez in the chest, and he was later pronounced dead.

No criminal charges were expected to be filed against Bradford.
