Flu comes early to Georgia

The first cases of flu have arrived in Georgia. Clinics in east Georgia report a few positive flu tests on Friday and Monday. Experts say this is a little early, and that Christmas is usually when doctors start to see the virus. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta call this National Influenza Vaccination week to urge people to get vaccinated.

NAACP gathers in Augusta

More than 500 delegates and volunteers from the Georgia NAACP are meeting in Augusta to talk about issues confronting African-Americans. The group's 66th annual state convention begins today. The convention will focus on increasing the number of African-American voters in this year's elections. It will also address how the struggling economy is affecting blacks, according to the Augusta Chronicle.

Public Works director indicted

An east Georgia Public Works director faces a federal indictment for allegedly violating the Clean Water Act. The Augusta Chronicle reports a Savannah Grand Jury indicted Harlem Public Works director Daniel Webster Cason on 11 counts. The FBI and Environmental Protection Agency say in 2004 Cason's department pumped a pollutant into the Euchee Creek and then falsified records. The Mayor of Harlem calls Cason a good employee who didn't mean for the incident to happen.
