Canton borrows $1 million as revenues decline

A northwest Georgia town has to borrow a million dollars.

Canton in Cherokee County says the 90-day loan is a tool local governments long have used to bridge gaps that appear as they wait for tax revenues.

This year, the loan comes as the city faces dramatic declines in revenues, especially from development.

Canton officials call this one of the leanest times the city's ever had.

Police arrest alleged fake doctors

In northwest Georgia, Canton police have shut down a medical clinic they say was being run by fake doctors. Authorities say brothers Miguel and Raul Valez allegedly performed surgeries and filled prescriptions despite having no medical training. The duo are under investigation for their possible connection to operating other medical clinics in metro Atlanta.

Government: Georgia man duped small businesses

A Georgia man stands accused of helping to defraud business owners nationwide of millions of dollars. Federal prosecutors say Marvin Hicks of Canton worked for a Florida –based company that fax-blasted phony offers to small businesses. The offers falsely promised to help the business owners sell their companies. Prosecutors want Hicks and six others to pay back more than $18-million dollars.
