State Seizes Dogs From North Georgia Kennel

State Agriculture officials have taken-in more than 130 dogs from a north Georgia kennel, citing unsanitary and unsafe conditions. The Atlanta Humane Society has accepted the dogs, and officials say most appear healthy and well-fed. The investigation of Richard’s Kennel near Cumming began after a customer complaint of a dog that had mange. Testing at the site however, revealed none of the kennel’s animals had the skin disease.

Needy dogs find new homes

Some Dixie-born dogs and cats are making their way up North. Georgia shelters have sent 139 dogs and 24 cats on the road for a three-day pet "super adoption" sponsored by a Connecticut organization. Adoptable dogs and cats are in short supply in New England, where more people spay and neuter their pets, and the harsh winters cut down the stray population. By Sunday, half all the animals had new homes.

172 dogs seized in Putnam County

The Putnam County sheriff’s office joined officials with the state agriculture department in the seizure of 172 dogs from an Eatonton dog dealer. County authorities say some of the dogs were found to be in bad condition on the dealer’s premises, with some dogs in cages stacked four high. Authorities say the dealer’s license was not current, and rabies shots for the dogs were not up-to-date. The dealer has not been charged. Some dogs have been taken-in by the Putnam County Animal Control--the rest turned over to animal rescue organizations.

"Biohazard" home in Henry County

Authorities have called a Henry County home a biohazard scene following the discovery of more than a dozen cats and three dogs living in the same space as five dead cats and trash. Complaints from neighbors about an odor from the home prompted animal control officers to investigate the single story residence-—one officer was overcome by the smell and had to be hospitalized. No charges have been filed against a couple in their 30’s who live at the home.
