Enrollment Spikes at Technical Colleges

Georgia’s technical colleges are seeing a spike in enrollment. Workers who have lost their jobs are retooling their skill set in hopes of getting certified jobs in other fields.

The Technical College System of Georgia reports 8,000 more students are enrolled compared to this time last year— a nine percent increase. Georgia has 33 technical colleges with more than 600 programs in everything from nursing to welding.

Students typically complete degrees in less than two years and the cost is less than $2,000 a year, much of which can be funded by HOPE grant money.

GA universities hit record enrollment

The state's public colleges and universities have hit record enrollment. A new report shows over 282,000 students within the University System of Georgia--that's nearly 5 percent more than last year. As a whole, the system of colleges and universities has gained 32,000 students in 5 years, or roughly the equivalent of enrollment at the University of Georgia. Most growth has been reflected in the state's smaller schools, such as two-year colleges and commuter schools.
