The city of Atlanta may have to return more than $30-million in federal money that is meant to help boost its poorest communities. That will happen unless program administrators get an extension from the federal government. Program officials say few applicants have been able to qualify or get the cash because of the red tape required. The money remains from the city's designation as a $100 million federal empowerment Zone in 1994.

Fed money to help public housing computer access
Over $400,000 in federal grant money is on the way to a pair of public housing authorities in Georgia--its aim is to help get better computer and internet access to those residents. Carrollton’s housing authority will get $150,000--an authority in Gainesville $300,000. The funding is part of the federal Public Housing Neighborhood Network Program. The money on the way to Georgia is part of more than 10-million dollars in grants distributed across the country.

Fed money for Georgia pandemic flu prep
Two million dollars in federal money is on the way to Georgia to help with pandemic flu preparedness. The money will reinforce continuing efforts to help hospitals and medical providers across the state better handle a flu outbreak. Projections from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say that in a worst-case scenario, at least 2.7 million Georgians could become sick in a flu outbreak.
