A draft recovery plan says preventing the extinction of the elusive ivory-billed woodpecker could cost more than 27 million dollars over five years. The plan released today was drafted by groups including the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the University of Georgia. The ivory-billed woodpecker was thought to be extinct but was spotted in Arkansas in 2004. The bird also makes its home in Georgia’s Okefenokee Swamp. Supporters say the nation shouldn’t pass up the opportunity to preserve what one called “this icon of the ornithological world.”
