Georgia company invents laser labels

A Georgia company has found a new way to label fruits and vegetables. Instead of using those little stickers, Durand-Wayland Inc. wants to etch indelible ink into the skins. The ink is safe to eat. The stickers most commonly bear a standard code, called a produce look-up or PLU code, used to ring up fruits and vegetables at the register. They also can include brand names, logos and country of origin information. The company is seeking federal approval for the laser labeling system.
