Georgia fastest growing in Southeast

Latest estimates from the Census Bureau show Georgia leads the pack as the fastest growing state in the southeast. Georgia also ranks 5th in national growth.

Over 202-thousand people have been added to the state’s population tally in one year’s time, ending July 1st, 2007. That amount represents an increase of 2.2 percent, to a total of 9.5 million Georgia residents.

The numbers continue a trend in Georgia growth, and come as no surprise to Judy Hadley, the state’s former liaison to the Census Bureau.

"We’ve been generating some good job growth down here…the climate is fairly mild, our housing costs are less than many other states, and people just seem to be coming down".

Georgia’s population increase includes an influx of about 94-thousand from other states, and more than 30-thousand from abroad.

National population trends show that southeastern and Rocky Mountain states have the fastest growth.

The Census will release county-by-county population breakdowns in spring 2008.
