Shrimping season is now open in Georgia’s waters, as of 6am this morning. The season allows trawlers to operate in the state’s territorial waters extending three miles offshore, with people allowed to use cast nets to catch shrimp. According to the Department of Natural Resources, shrimpers in Georgia harvested nearly two-million pounds of shrimp last year.

Shrimping season extended
Georgia’s shrimping season is being extended by two weeks to January 15th. The state Department of Natural Resources says the decision to extend the season is based on information from biologists who monitor the shrimp population. The order does NOT include most creeks and rivers, which closes to shrimping today.

Shrimping season nears
Shrimp season starts this month in Georgia. Coastal waters will be open from the shore to 3 miles out on June 10. It's timed to maximize shrimp harvesting potential. Shrimping is an important part of coastal Georgia's economy and white shrimp catches have been below average since last June.
