The Georgia Department of Transportation is considering building trucks-only lanes around the state. The lanes along the side of the state's interstate highways and other roads are meant to help handle what's expected to be a big increase in freight moved through Georgia.
DOT officials say that 940 million tons of freight moved across the state's highways and interstates in 2004. By the year 2035, that amount is expected to double.
The idea being studied would have new lanes created, and not take away from existing ones.
The DOT is holding a series of meetings around the state, where the public can comment on the idea. The first is scheduled for this evening in Dalton at the Northwest Georgia Trade and Convention center--from 5-7pm.
Other meetings will take place in Macon this Thursday, in Savannah on May 15th, and on May 22nd in Kennesaw.
