Georgia DOT Committed To HOV Exits

The Georgia Department of Transportation says it is committed to left side HOV exit lanes, despite a tragic bus accident 2 week ago.
About 30 workers converged on the HOV off ramp in Atlanta where a bus accident killed 7 people on March 2nd.

Crews installed a bigger stop sign on top of the ramp, painted lines with reflective material and wrote the Word Exit on the pavement at the bottom of the ramp.

Mark McKennon with the DOT says signage alone cannot prevent accidents.

"You do have driver error," he says. "We can’t predict mistakes, but we can certainly do all we can to help the visibility on this ramp and hopefully prevent another accident like that one."

DOT officials say they are planning more HOV left hand exits as they expand the system in Atlanta.

They say it’s necessary to ease traffic congestion and HOV drivers can’t be expected to cross multiple lanes to get off the road.
