Now that Congress has outlined a plan to increase federal funds for Peachcare, Georgia leaders say they’re willing to share the costs.
Governor Sonny Perdue says the state will shift Medicaid dollars to the Peachcare child health program until Congress approves a federal funding plan. Health advocates had urged the move earlier, but Perdue says he did not want to commit state money until he was convinced Congress would come through.
He says the state can't afford the program by itselft. He says he wanted Congress to know that the state would cooperate, but would not bear the burden of the cost.
Washington lawmakers plan to attach money for Peachcare to an Iraq war spending bill. Until President Bush signs it into law, Governor Perdue says Peachcare will NOT enroll any new children.
