Georgia DOT Improves Signs On HOV Lanes

The Georgia Department of Transportation will make changes to road signs that lead to exits on all of it’s carpool exit lanes. The move comes after a tragic bus crash earlier this month that killed 7 people. The driver of the bus carrying a college baseball team from Ohio ran up a car pool exit lane at full speed. Confusion over signage may have played a role in the accident that followed.

Georgia DOT officials say there signage before the bus crash did comply with national standards, but they say improvements could help prevent similar accident. Changes include larger STOP AHEAD signs leading up the exit. The word EXIT will be added to another sign at the bottom of each ramp and some lines on the pavement will be widened. DOT officials say the work on all 7 car pool exit lanes in Metro Atlanta will take about 3 weeks.
