State transportation officials say that while the left hand HOV exit ramp on I-75 near downtown Atlanta may be "outdated", it met all technical requirements when it was designed in 1982. There might be alterations made to the ramp in question, but there are no immediate plans to do so, according to officials. The discussions come in the wake of the tragic accident Friday morning just outside downtown Atlanta, where a charter bus carrying a college baseball team tumbled over an overpass bridge and crashed, killing six and injuring 29. Georgia officials say since it started its' carpool lane system nine years ago, there have been 82 accidents involving that particular road on the overpass. However, a Georgia DOT spokesperson says only seven of the accidents out of the 82 involved the ramp.
It has been slow improvement for the remaining injured from Friday's accident, who are in Atlanta-area hospitals. Bluffton University's baseball coach, James Grandey, is listed in serious condition and in intensive care. Two of the players still hospitalized are in 'critical' condition, while the other three are in listed as 'fair'.
