The Department of Labor reports the state's unemployment rate rose slightly in April, up one tenth of a percentage point over March. The number measures the percentage of non-governmental employees who are out of work. Nearly 5 million people make up Georgia's civilian labor force. Of that, a little less than 200,000 are unemployed.
Even so ... the numbers represent some good news for Georgia. From March to April of this year, nearly 30-thousand new jobs were added, primarily in the trade and service-related industries. Almost all of the state's 14 metro areas reported some job growth. Columbus was the only exception.
