Georgia starts carbon registry

Georgia has become the first southern state to start a public carbon registry. The state-run Carbon Sequestration Registry is like a stock exchange, but it’s a carbon credit exchange. Georgia landowners register, and get so-called “carbon credits” based on the amount of greenhouse gases their trees absorb. A company like Georgia Power can buy that landowner’s carbon credits as a way of offsetting its own carbon emissions. Proponents say the program encourages landowners to keep their land rather than sell to developers, and allows forestland to be profitable. For more information check out www.gacarbon.org.
