Parents sue to keep kids' dental

Parents of children covered by PeachCare and Medicaid want a federal judge to force their health plans to continue a popular dental provider.

The parents filed a class-action lawsuit today on behalf of 100 thousand children in Georgia.

Next week, Kool Smiles, a dental company for kids, faces the termination of its contracts with two health care organizations that administer Medicaid and PeachCare.

Some parents of children who use Kool Smiles say they've looked for alternate dentists, but most either don't accept PeachCare and Medicaid, or they don't provide adequate service.

State Representative Ed Lindsey, an attorney who filed the lawsuit, says more than 70 thousand children will have similar stories:

“We have talked to other dentists. We've talked to the authorities with the Georgia Dental Association and others. Everyone that we've talked to has told us that this is not something that can be absorbed by these other dentists in the state of Georgia.”

There are five defendants named in the suit, including Georgia's Department of Community Health, and the two health care companies, Wellcare and Peach State.
