A parade of rural mayors and county commissioners today collected hundreds of checks for their communities as part of grant programs from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development.
Elected officials from all parts of the state lined up in a Savannah hotel ballroom for their check from the Community Development Block Grant program. In all, $41 million was given to officials from 71communities.
Clay County will use their grant for a new social service center. Reynolds and Richmond Counties will use theirs for sewer improvements. Decatur County is getting drainage work.
Governor Sonny Perdue, getting his photo taken with everyone collecting a check, said, "Each of the recipients here today, you've established a solid, comprehensive plan to put these monies to work. You've anticipated those needs and adopted timetables and budgets."
About $6 million was also given out in grants for affordable housing units in 28 communities.
The federal money goes to rural communities and is overseen by the state Department of Community Affairs.
