Governor Perdue says there is no doubt that Georgia has a right to the water in Lake Lanier.
Two legal questions federal courts are now considering are whether Georgia has a right to the water in Lake Lanier, and whether Georgia needs congressional approval to get that water. The reservoir is managed by the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers.
Governor Perdue says there’s no question Georgia should be allows to draw drinking water out of Lake Lanier.
“It’s unconscionable to me to think that the federal government could come in and create a reservoir within your state boundaries and say you can’t use it.” Perdue says. “That’s beyond belief to me”
Perdue says congress took land from Georgia to build the reservoir.
Alabama and Florida argue that Georgia is taking too much water and not leaving enough for power plants and endangered species downstream along the Chattahoochee.
