Savannah-Chatham County public school officials plan to offer high school students online classes to ease school overcrowding caused by the No Child Left Behind law.
Hundreds of students are transferring out of three high schools that haven't made Adequate Yearly Progress. They are moving into two that have. Now those two schools will offer transfer students the option to take virtual classes from their homes or from one of two sites in the district.
But the school system's Burnadette Ball-Oliver doesn't blame classroom overcrowding for online classes. "I think if you look at the research, you will see that more and more virtual schools are evolving because of the type of learners that we're dealing with based on the technological society that we live in," she says.
At least one school board member, however, said there would be "portables everywhere" if there weren't a plan for transfer students. School officials say, 100% of the high school cirriculum will be online and students will get bus passes to meet their teachers.
