Georgia was the ninth fastest growing state over the past year. New Census data details the fastest growing states by population between July 1, 2007, and July 1, 2008. The data shows Georgia gained 162,447 residents and saw a 2 percent population increase. The West was the fastest-growing region, increasing its population 1.4 percent. But the South added the highest number of people over the period, with 1.4 million newcomers. Utah topped the list, adding 2.7 million people. North Carolina is No. 4 for rate of growth on the list, and South Carolina is No. 10.
