Veterinarians say technicians needed

Veterinarians in Georgia say they need more help and want more trained technicians.

The Georgia Veterinary Medical Association says the statewide ratio is five veterinarians to one registered technician. The ideal ratio is one to one.

Technicians help with things like blood work, anesthesia and X-rays.

Dr. Kevin Chapman is a veterinarian in Hoschton. He and his colleagues are pushing hard to get a technician program started at Columbus Technical College.

"We have gotten veterinarians down there to organize and they have themselves started a fundraising because what we need to do is come up with about half of the fees it would take to run a program."

Chapman says the other half would come from student’s tuition. Currently, there are four colleges in the state that offer veterinary technician courses, but none cover southwest Georgia.
