Thieves, Store Owners In Cahoots

Authorities have arrested convenience store owners and employees in Clarke and Oconee counties suspected of buying stolen property from burglars. Authorities said Tuesday they even gave thieves shopping lists of what to steal, and officials said some of the stores were running casinos. Athens-Clarke Police Chief Jack Lumpkin said investigators learned that the burglars were trading TVs, computers and other electronics for cash at certain stores. He said sheriff's ffices in Barrow and Walton counties loaned undercover deputies to pretend to sell stolen merchandise at the stores. Police identified the store owners arrested as 43-year-old Asif Aman and 33-year-old Guatam "Tommy" Desai, both of Athens, and 58-year-old Ashraf Nathani of Duluth.
