Busch Wins NASCAR Race In Hampton

NASCAR racing was in gear Sunday at Atlanta Motor Speedway in Hampton. The win went to Kurt Busch. Jeff Gordon and Carl Edwards ran 2nd and 3rd respectively.

For Georgia drivers in the race--Unadilla’s David Ragan finished 19th. Reed Sorenson from Peachtree City ran 33rd. Dawsonville’s Bill Elliot was knocked out by accident.

Georgia sports for Tuesday, August 19th

Atlanta Braves--

The Braves wrapped their series against the San Francisco Giants Monday afternoon with a 5-0 loss. It concluded a dismal homestand in which the Braves scored only 1 victory in 7 games--that coming against the Giants in the 4-game series. The Braves now hit the road to open a series in New York tonight against the NL-East division leading Mets.

Veteran pitcher Tom Glavine will know more about his baseball future after tomorrow’s visit to a specialist in Birmingham. Glavine returned to the mound last week after two months on the disabled list nursing a bad left elbow—he landed back on the DL following the game against the Chicago Cubs. Should an MRI reveal he needs surgery to repair the flexor tendon in the elbow, Glavine says he’ll have the surgery and leave the door open to playing again in 2009. If ligament replacement surgery is required, he says he will retire.

NASCAR/Atlanta Motor Speedway--

Officials with NASCAR and the Atlanta Motor Speedway are expected to announce later today the introduction of a night race at Hampton for 2009. A source says the race under-the-lights would be scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

Georgia sports for Monday, March 10th

Congratulations to the boys' and girls' championship winning team in high school title game action over the weekend.

Winners on the boys' side: 5A-Norcross, 4A-Columbia, 3A-Glenn Hills, 2A-Wesleyan, 1A-Hancock Central.
Winners on the girls' side: 5A-Stephenson, 4A-SW DeKalb, 3A-Kendrick, 2A-Wesleyan, 1A-Calvary Day.

Racing over the weekend in Hampton at Atlanta Motor Speedway included the stock cars' top series race on Sunday--won by Kyle Busch. Busch took the lead for good with 50 laps to go in the event. He sprinted ahead when Carl Edwards went out of the race with a broken transmission.

Spring training baseball for the Atlanta Braves--they beat up the Cardinals in Orlando Sunday, 12-5. Matt Diaz had 3 hits, including a double. Scott Thorman had 4 RBI's and a home run. On the mound, Tim Hudson threw an effective 4 innings.

Georgia sports for Monday, October 29th

Top series stock car racing from Hampton's Atlanta Motor Speedway saw victory for Jimmie Johnson on Sunday. With that result, Johnson draws to within 3 points of the lead in the chase for the season's Nextel Cup championship. 4-time champ Jeff Gordon leads Johnson in the Chase by the 3 points with 3 races to go.

The college football weekend just wrapped-up included Georgia's win in Jacksonville over Florida on Saturday. The 42-30 victory for the Bulldogs over the Gators pushed Georgia to a 6-2 overall record, and a 4-2 mark in the Southeastern Conference. Georgia's performance moved the team up 10 spots to number-10 in the new Associated Press rankings.
