King sibilings lawsuit heats up

A Fulton County judge has ordered Bernice King to resume documenting her mother's personal papers in accordance with an earlier decree requested by her brother, Dexter. The documents were part of a $1.4 million book deal with Penguin Group, but that deal fell though earlier this month after the family missed a deadline from the New York-based publisher to turn the documents over. It is unclear now whether the documents can or will be used for any future such deals. Dozens of supporters, lawyers and media packed the Friday court hearing for more than four hours and even waited through an emergency evacuation of the courthouse to hear from the judge. But the issue of whether Coretta Scott King's papers are the property of her husband's estate is still undecided.

Battle over King papers in court

The children of Coretta Scott King and the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. are facing off in an Atlanta courtroom today, at odds over their mother's personal papers that could factor into a lucrative book deal. Dexter King is seeking his mother's papers, which are currently in his sister's possession. Bernice King is refusing to turn over the papers, claiming her mother did not want to participate in the $1.4 million book deal. New York-based Penguin Group is threatening to pull the deal this week without the documents.

FBI spied on MLK's widow

Newly-released documents show that federal agents spied on the widow of Reverend Martin Luther King Junior for several years after his assassination in 1968. The documents show that the FBI worried Coretta Scott King would follow in the footsteps of the slain civil rights leader. In memos, the FBI noted concern that she might attempt "to tie the anti-Vietnam movement to the civil rights movement." The FBI closed its file on King four years after her husband’s death. Coretta Scott King died in February 2006.

Israel honors Coretta Scott King

Israel will name a forest in northern Galilee after Coretta Scott King. The Coretta Scott King Forest will comprise at least 10,000 trees and be a living memorial to King's legacy of peace and justice. King, who died last year, is the widow of the late civil rights leader Doctor Martin Luther King Junior. Two members of the Congressional Black Caucus said the initiative would strengthen ties between blacks and Jews dating back to the early Civil Rights Movement.
