MLK Memorial gets help from Wal-Mart Foundation

The Martin Luther King, Jr. National Memorial is one step closer to being built in the nation's capitol.

The Wal-Mart Foundation has extended a $12.5 million letter of credit to the project's foundation.

The loan now allows the Memorial Foundation to get the necessary construction permit from the National Park Service.

The memorial to be built on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. is expected to be completed in 2010.

King Day events and ceremonies across Georgia

Georgians are remembering the legacy of Martin Luther King-Jr. on this national holiday. Events across the state have been held throughout the weekend, and many are scheduled for today as well.

U.S. Representative John Lewis spoke at King events at Augusta State University on Saturday. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama spoke at services at Ebenezer Baptist Church Sunday. Republican candidate Mike Huckabee is among several politicians and dignitaries attending services today in Atlanta.

Former president Bill Clinton is also in Atlanta this morning for King ceremonies. Following those events, he will travel to Macon for an afternoon campaign rally in support of his wife's presidential candidacy.

Gwinnett cities to vote on King holiday

Three cities in Gwinnett County will decide this month whether to recognize the Martin Luther King holiday in January. The city of Lawrenceville will vote tonight on the issue. Officials with Lilburn and Grayson will discuss the idea at meetings later this month. On November 12th, the city of Snellville in Gwinnett voted to recognize King Day as a holiday.

FBI spied on MLK's widow

Newly-released documents show that federal agents spied on the widow of Reverend Martin Luther King Junior for several years after his assassination in 1968. The documents show that the FBI worried Coretta Scott King would follow in the footsteps of the slain civil rights leader. In memos, the FBI noted concern that she might attempt "to tie the anti-Vietnam movement to the civil rights movement." The FBI closed its file on King four years after her husband’s death. Coretta Scott King died in February 2006.

King recordings among auction items

More belongings of late civil rights leader Doctor Martin Luther King Junior are going up for auction. Among them, recordings of President John F. Kennedy, Robert Kennedy and Doctor King. Gallery 63 in Atlanta plans to auction them next month.

Memorial service for Yolanda King

A memorial service for Yolanda King is set for later today in Atlanta. The oldest child of civil rights leader Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. died just over a week ago in California at 51 years old. The service will be at Ebenezer Baptist Church Horizons Sanctuary, across the street from the historic church where her father once preached. Former Atlanta mayor and King lieutenant Andrew Young is expected to be among those speaking at the service.
