Storm downs tree into Carter's Americus home

An oak tree struck the Plains home of former President Jimmy Carter as Tropical Storm Fay moved through southwest Georgia, according to a family member.

Jeff Carter, one of the former president's sons, says the tree struck the house Saturday night just above the living room. He says both his father and his mother, Rosalynn Carter, were at home at the time but neither was hurt.

The former president is scheduled to address the Democratic National Convention in Denver this evening.

Chambliss: Biden won't help Obama in South

Whether Barack Obama’s choice of vice presidential running mate will help in Georgia is not a question for Georgia Republican Senator Saxby Chambliss. He told reporters over the weekend that the Obama choice of Joe Biden won’t help much in the conservative South. Chambliss was joined on a conference call by Representative Tom Price, and says Biden’s record is nearly as liberal as Obama’s. The Democrats are gathering in Denver for the party’s convention this week.

Rep. John Lewis may switch support to Obama

Congressman John Lewis.

Congressman John Lewis (D), who is known as one of New York Senator Hillary Clinton’s strongest black supporters, suggested Thursday that he may support Illinois Senator Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention in Denver this summer instead, according to a report appearing in the New York Times.

“Something is happening in America and people are prepared and ready to make that great leap," Lewis was reported as saying.
Lewis, who represents Atlanta's fifth district, is a veteran of the civil rights movement.
