A convicted cop killer has an execution date. Today the Department of Corrections set July 17th to execute 38-year-old Troy Anthony Davis. Georgia executes triple murderer
John Hightower was put to death by the state last night in Jackson--he was pronounced dead at 7:59pm. The 63-year-old Hightower was executed for the triple murders in 1987 of his wife and two stepdaughters.
Hightower made a final brief statement and apologized to the victims' family. He also thanked his family and friends for their support. At the end, he declined a final prayer. No witnesses were there from his wife's family. Hightower had a friend, his pastor and a paralegal there on his behalf. Hightower's last meal included fried pork chops, fried green tomatoes, and strawberry ice cream.
It was the first execution in Georgia in nearly two years.

Georgia execution set for tonight
John Hightower is scheduled to be put to death by lethal injection at 8 o'clock tonight. There have been a flurry of last minute appeals by his lawyers, including one before the state Board of Pardons and Paroles. The Board was expected to announce their decision this morning.
Hightower was convicted in 1988 of the killing of his wife and two stepdaughters in Milledgeville in July of 1987. This would be the first execution in Georgia in nearly two years.

Death row appeal continues
Today the state Supreme Court heard arguments on why another death row inmate shouldn’t be executed. John Hightower is scheduled to die tomorrow. Today his lawyer told justices that Hightower deserves to live because he has remorse and has tried to redeem himself in prison. Hightower was convicted of killing his wife and two stepdaughters in 1987. A decision is expected later today.
