Georgia sports for Friday, June 6th

Atlanta Braves--

The Braves got back on the winning track last night at home with a 7-5 final over the Florida Marlins. The victory made it 3 in the 4-game series for the Braves. The Atlanta-offense included 3 home runs. One of the deep drives came courtesy Chipper Jones, who knocked his 400th career home run. Chipper continues a strong season at the plate, hitting now for a .418 average which leads the majors. He had 4 hits last night. The Braves welcome the NL-East division leading Philidelphia Phillies to Turner Field tonight.

Georgia Bulldogs/NCAA Baseball--

There are 16 teams left in the NCAA Baseball Tournament, now divided into 8 Super Regional sites. Georgia’s Bulldogs are still alive, and they’ll host North Carolina State this afternoon at noon in Athens. Winner of the 'best-of-3' series moves on to the next week's College World Series to join 7 other clubs.

NCAA Baseball Tournament--Georgia/Georgia Tech

The Georgia Bulldogs have moved-on in the NCAA Baseball Tournament. They did so on their home field with a big victory over their rival Georgia Tech--the final of 18-6 last night in Athens. Georgia won games over Tech’s Yellow Jackets Sunday and Monday to advance to the Super Regional round of the NCAA’s. The Bulldogs will host a best-of-3 series against North Carolina State this coming weekend.

Atlanta Braves--

The Braves are back home, and that means back on the winning track. Shortstop Yunel Escobar ripped a 2-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning for the Braves’ 7-5 win over the Florida Marlins last night in Atlanta. The game also featured the return of John Smoltz after 5 weeks on the disabled list. In his 9th inning of work, he allowed 3 hits and 2 runs to Florida to allow the visitors a brief lead. The Braves tied the game in their half of the 9th to send the contest to extra innings.

Georgia sports for Monday, June 2nd

The Atlanta Braves wrapped up yet another disappointing road trip, winning only once in 6 games. Sunday in Cincinnati, the Reds completed a sweep of the Braves with a 6-2 win. Making matters worse was the exit of two pitchers to injury. Starting pitcher Tim Hudson had to leave the contest in the 7th inning with a strained left hamstring, and reliever Blaine Boyer followed soon after in the same inning with a knee problem. The Braves begin a homestand in Atlanta tonight, opening a series against the Florida Marlins.

From college baseball, rivals Georgia and Georgia Tech will meet once more today--the winner moves ahead to the Super Regional round of the NCAA baseball tournament. Yesterday, the Bulldogs beat the Yellow Jackets 8-0 on Georgia’s home field in Athens, in one of the 16 regionals finishing play in the tournament’s opening weekend.
