Former northeast Georgia DA indicted

A nine-count indictment has been handed down by a Banks County grand jury against a former northeast Georgia district attorney and two others. The indictment alleges finanacial misuse by Tim Madison and the others relating to a victims' assistance fund.

Madison and his assistant prosecutor in the Piedmont Judicial Circuit are charged with theft by taking, theft by receiving stolen property, and violation of oath by public officer. Madison and his wife Linn are charged with making false statements and conspiracy--allegations that she was paid for hours she did not work for a victims assitance program.

Madison resigned June 4th as DA for the Piedmont Circuit, which serves Banks, Barrow and Jackson counties. Governor Sonny Perdue a week ago named Richard Bridgeman to replace Madison in the post.

Five vie for Northeast Georgia DA job

Five people filed applications before Wednesday's deadline for the job of Piedmont Judicial Circuit District Attorney. The office serves the counties of Jackson, Barrow, and Banks in northeast Georgia.

Tim Madison resigned from the post last month as the state investigation into allegations of misuse of office funds continues. Since then, an assistant Barrow County prosecutor, Allison Maudlin, has been filling-in.

The five hopefuls include three prosecutors and two private attorneys. The selected person will serve through next year, after which the job is on the ballot. Governor Sonny Perdue is expected to make a decision next month.
