Plant Vogtle hearings on license renewal

One of Georgia’s two nuclear energy plants is looking to continue its operation through the year 2049. Plant Vogtle officials are seeking a license renewal to stay in operation in Waynesboro in east Georgia. Public hearings on the issue were held yesterday. Enviromental groups argued that Vogtle draws-in too much water from the Savannah River, and they worry about potential health threats from radioactive chemicals. Waynesboro plant set to close

Three years after it opened, an Indiana-based company is shutting its doors in southeast Georgia.

Cummins Filtration has announced that it is looking for someone to buy its Waynesboro facility.

The plant makes small exhaust components for lawn and garden equipment.

The Atlanta Business Chronicle reports the plant has been unprofitable since it opened in 2003.

Cummins Filtration Company was founded nearly 5 decades ago.

The Waynesboro plant employs 250 full-time employees and 80 temporary workers.

All employees will be offered a bonus if they stay on until this year’s production cycle is complete.

A definitive closing date has not been announced.
