Drivers get gas pump bonus on Jan. 1

Georgia drivers will get a New Year’s gift at the gas pump starting Thursday as the state fuel tax drops by about 4 cents. Every six months the state Department of Revenue resets the gas tax--the state portion of taxes will fall from 11 cents, to 7.1 cents per gallon. That will also result in a drop in local sales taxes on gasoline. Drivers in Georgia and across the nation have been enjoying tumbling prices at the pump for the past couple of months. According to the Triple-A Fuel Gauge Report, the average for a gallon of regular unleaded in Georgia stands at $1.51.

Governor halts increase in state gas tax

Governor Sonny Perdue is giving Georgians a break in rising gas prices. Perdue this morning signed an executive order that holds-back what would have been a 2.9 cent-per-gallon increase to the state gasoline tax--a 4.2 cent increase for diesel. The levy would have taken effect on July 1st, the start of the new fiscal year. Perdue says it wouldn’t be fair for the state to take-in a tax windfall while Georgians are struggling to keep up with spiraling prices at the pump.

Georgia set to raise gas tax

Georgia’s about to raise its gas tax. Later today, officials will post the new rate that will take effect July 1st.

In Georgia, the price of every gallon includes about 18 cents in state taxes and 18 cents in federal taxes, plus a local tax that varies from county to county.

According to AAA, the average gas price in the state is currently $3.93.

State gas tax goes up two cents

The new month brings bad news for Georgia drivers--record high gas prices at the pump are going up. The state's gas tax jumps 2 cents a gallon today.

This is an automatic adjustment of the motor fuel sales tax that occurs when gasoline prices rise or fall 25-percent from a preset average. The tax hike goes from 15.2 to 17.3 cents a gallon. Another hike in the gas tax is likely on July 1st, when Georgia does its twice-a-year recalculation of the tax. The average price of gasoline is over 3-dollars a gallon.
