Prison escapee caught in Lavonia

A high-profile prison escapee is now behind bars.

Apparently it took officers hours to realize they had 52-year-old Johnny Mack Brown in custody. Brown has been on the run for four weeks after fleeing Hays State Prison in northwest Georgia.

Authorities caught him in Lavonia, near South Carolina. Brown had dyed his hair, grew a beard and shed many pounds.

An inmate who escaped with Brown remains at large.

Escapee named "Most Wanted"

A Georgia man who escaped a state prison Oct. 13 has been added to the U.S. Marshals Service Most Wanted List. 52-year-old Johnny Mack Brown of Elberton was serving a life sentence at Hays State Prison in northwest Georgia, from where he escaped. He was convicted of shooting a guard 3 times during an armored car robbery in 1997 in Athens. A $25,000 reward is being offered for information leading to Brown's arrest. He is considered armed and dangerous.

Search for escaped inmates

Two escaped prison inmates are on the run in northwest Georgia. The Department of Corrections says 53-year-old Johnny M. Brown and 48-year-old Michael A. Tweedel escaped from Hays State Prison near Trion on Monday morning. Brown is serving two 10-year sentences for armed robbery in Cobb County. Tweedel is serving a life sentence for armed robbery, hijacking a vehicle and aggravated assault and battery in Clarke County.
