Atlanta Iraqi Refugees in 'Dire Straits'

A new report says Iraqi refugees living in the United States face multiple problems, including joblessness and the threat of homelessness, made worse by the economic recession. The report called "In Dire Straits," by the International Rescue Committee, calls for more federal financial assistance, a more generous package of services and better preparation of the displaced people before they arrive in America. The study focused on Atlanta and Phoenix. It says that while the commission found examples of successful adaptation, "most Iraqi refugees who were interviewed painted a picture of despair and frustration." It said: "Refugees are finding it difficult to find a job, and without secure income some are facing eviction from their homes."
