Georgia education officials hope to save a sports program for disabled students funded by the state. Officials say there is a stopgap plan in-place to keep the American Association of Adapted Sports Programs running in Georgia schools. The non-profit based in Atlanta helps to provide handball, basketball and football games for about 500 state families with disabled athletes. Problems arose when funding for the programs fell victim to the budget ax, with 20-percent in cuts hitting education and other departments. Now, officials expect the program to get a little over $200,000, compared to the typical $700,000.

Steele urges Ga. GOP to stay the course
Republicans meeting in Savannah this morning got a pep talk from the party's national chairman. Michael Steele addressed about 1,500 delegates to the state party convention at the Savannah International Trade and Convention Center.
Steele addressed a state party confident in its message and ability to win at the polls. This stands in contrast to the national party, which seems in introspective mode following recent losses. Georgia Republicans have no such hand-ringing.
"When Georgia stayed red when the rest of the nation went blue, you were the ones who made that happen," said state party Chair Sue Everhart. "We were the last man standing and we did our job... We do not want to change."
Steele urged delegates not to water down their beliefs. "Where does the party go?" Steele asked. "Well, the first thing is that we stop trying to re-make, re-do, re-brand, re-build, re-anything... We're never too conservative for this country."
Steele was followed on-stage by former U.S. Rep. J.C. Watts, a former football star who used a sports story to convey his point. Watts said he heard of a team that lost big. The coach started out the next practice with, "This is a football."
"There was a time when you thought Republican, you thought 'less government, less spending,'" Watts said. "When we look no different than they look, people have a hard time figuring out who are the Republicans and the Democrats."
Yesterday, delegates heard similar messages from candidates for statewide office, including gubernatorial candidates John Oxendine, the state Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner, and Eric Johnson, a Savannah State Senator.
"We need to make people realize that we are conservatives and we don't need to apologize for that," Oxendine said. "As long the Republicans are steady, the people will understand that and will come back to the GOP," Johnson said.
Georgia Republicans haven't had to confront the "should we change" debate with as much electoral consequence as the GOP elsewhere. The conservative message still wins in Georgia, with Democrats holding few statewide offices.
The Georgia Republican Convention is expected to conclude today with Everhart's re-election as party chair and addresses from Governor Sonny Perdue and both U.S. Senators, Saxby Chambliss and Johnny Isaakson.

Halls of Fame Funding
Macon leaders cannot agree on a way to help fund the Georgia Sports and Music Halls of Fame, and that's bad news for the future of the two Macon museums.
The Halls of Fame are state agencies, but over the last two years there's been a growing desire at the State Capitol to have the City of Macon contribute something financially. Any change would have to be approved by Macon's local legislative delegation.
The city came up with a plan and voted to raise the hotel-motel tax by a penny and split the proceeds between the two halls. But, that proposal was rejected by some democratic lawmakers who want the money split four ways. City councilman Erick Erickson says the city is in a tough spot.
"They're being held hostage by the Governor and General Assembly who are demanding local funds unlike any other state financed project and they're also being held hostage to David Lucas and Robert Brown wanting this amphitheatre/football stadium. No one else wanted it. No one else asked for it. We had a unanimous county and city saying we just wanted a two-way split and yet for some reason we can't get it."
Erickson says the members of the local delegation need to come together so the museums do not close.

Georgia sports roundup--Wed, Dec. 31st
Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets look to wrap a successful season under first-year head coach Paul Johnson with a win in tonight's Chick-Fil-A Bowl from Atlanta. Tech is aiming for its first 10-win season since 1998. Johnson earlier this month earned ACC Coach of the Year honors. Tech, ranked 14th in the nation, will face LSU in the bowl game tonight from the Georgia Dome.
Georgia's Bulldogs put their #16 ranking on the field in Orlando tomorrow afternoon for the Capital One Bowl matchup against Michigan State. The Bulldogs began the season with ultra-high expectations, ranked as a preseason #1. Georgia fans will wonder if this will be the final game for quarterback Matthew Stafford and tailback Knowshon Moreno, who both might consider leaving school for the NFL Draft.
Atlanta Falcons--
The Falcons are deep in preparation for their first NFL playoff game in four years, this Saturday afternoon in Phoneix against the Arizona Cardinals. Meanwhile, an honor for rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. The first-year QB earned Associated Press honors as Offensive Rookie of the Year. The Boston College product helped lead the Falcons to an 11-5 regular season record, following a dismal 2007 for the franchise.

Gun lawsuit ordered back to state court
The federal appeals court in Atlanta has ordered a lawsuit claiming New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg libeled a Georgia sporting goods store by calling it one of several "rogue gun dealers" to be returned to the state court where it originated. Friday's decision by the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals was the latest development in a two-year legal battle that began when Bloomberg sued 15 firearms brokers in five states, including Georgia. The suit said they were selling weapons that ended up in the hands of New York criminals. Former U.S. Rep. Bob Barr, representing Adventure Outdoor Sports in Smyrna, Ga., argued before the appeals court in September that the suit should be returned to state Superior Court. Bloomberg's lawyers wanted the suit to be dismissed or remain in federal court, because it applies to whether the gun stores violated federal laws.

UGA radio legend Larry Munson calls it quits
Munson has been in failing health in recent years. Just this year, following a fall in the spring, he underwent brain surgery. Munson stopped traveling to games recently last year, only calling home games.
The statement released by the school Monday said Munson decided over the weekend to call the end of his career after talking with doctors, family, and close friends.
The Munson archives overflow with classic Georgia Bulldog football calls, including from the national championship 1980 season.
The University has announced that Scott Howard will assume play-by-play duties the rest of this season, with former UGA star Eric Zeier on color commentary. The two had been paired on road games since last year.
Munson plans to watch Georgia’s upcoming game against Alabama at home with family and friends. He turns 86 years old this weekend.

The Falcons suffered their first loss of the season, falling 24-9 on the road at Tampa Bay Sunday afternoon. The Buccaneers built a 17-0 lead in the game, helped by a pair of interceptions thrown by Falcons' rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. Tampa was able to stifle the Atlanta-running attack, holding Michael Turner to only 42 yards. A week ago, Turner set an Atlanta single-game rushing mark with 220 yards. The Falcons are 1-1 through 2 games--they'll host Kansas City next Sunday.

Georgia sports for Monday, September 8th
The Falcons began their new era with a bang in posting a 34-21 season-opening victory over the Detroit Lions inside the Georgia Dome Sunday afternoon. The win marked a successful debut for new head coach Mike Smith, and spotlighted strong performances from new Falcons. Rookie quarterback Matt Ryan's first pass of his career was a 62-yard strike to receiver Michael Jenkins on Atlanta's first offensive series and thrid play. Ryan was 9-of-13 passing for 161 yards and the touchdown. The bigger headline however, probably came from offseason signee Michael Turner--he rolled up 220 rushing yards, setting a new team record. The mark passed the old record held by Gerald Riggs--202 yards in a 1984 game. The Falcons' 318 rushing yards was a team record for a single game. The Falcons next week travel to Tampa Bay.
