After a one year absence, the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony is headed back to Macon.
Officials with the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame Authority voted to return the ceremony to Macon. This year the event was held in Atlanta and raised 86-thousand dollars.
However, people in Macon were determined to get the ceremony back to the museum's home town and held a radio telethon. Local sports talk show host, Bill Shanks says that event raised 40-thousand dollars in pledges including a gift from major league pitcher, Kevin Brown, who is a member of the Georgia Sports Hall of Fame.
"He was extremely impressed with how he was treated the year he was inducted, which was 2007, and just how special the event was here in Macon, and he pledged 10-thousand dollars which was a huge surprise and obviously very, very, welcome."
This year Georgia lawmakers voted to cut the museum's budget by 150-thousand dollars and said the facility must become self sufficient within the next five years.

Georgia sports for Wednesday, May 23rd
It was a good opening for the Braves in their series against the NL-East leading Mets, as the Braves won 8-1 last night. Kyle Davies threw 8 strong innings on the mound, and added his own 3-run homer in the 6th inning at the plate. Davies improved his record to 2-2 with only a run and 6 hits allowed in his 8 innings of work. Scott Thorman added a home run, and there were 2 hits each for Kelly Johnson, Brian McCann, and Andruw Jones. The Braves are back to within a game-and-a-half of the division lead.
The NBA Draft lottery was held last night. The Atlanta Hawks will have the 3rd overall pick for the draft, which comes in late June. They'll also have the number-11 pick in the 1st round.
Georgia and Georgia Tech each won a sports championship on Tuesday. The NCAA team tennis championships from Athens concluded yesterday. It was victory for the Georgia Bulldogs in the men's tournament--they won their 5th title with the win over Illinois. Georgia Tech won the women's team title, their triumph over UCLA. It's the first championship for Tech women's tennis.
Georgia Tech, Georgia Southern, and Georgia State are all involved in their respective conference baseball tournaments today. Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets are the number-7 seed for the ACC Tournament in Jacksonville. Tech faces North Carolina at 1pm this afternoon. The Eagles of Georgia Southern are in Charleston for the Southern Conference tourney. The Eagles take-on Elon College at 4 o'clock.
Georgia State's Panthers lead-off the Colonial Athletic Association tournament in Wilmington--they face Old Dominion at noon today.

Georgia sports for Monday, October 15th
From the college football weekend just wrapped up--narrow wins for Georgia and Georgia Tech, while Georgia Southern suffered a narrow loss. Georgia's Bulldogs kicked a field goal as time expired to upend the Commordores at Vanderbilt 20-17. Tech's Yellow Jackets held-on down at Miami's Orange Bowl for the 17-14 win over the Hurricanes. For the Eagles of Georgia Southern, it was the tough overtime defeat on the road at Elon, 36-33.
Georgia meanwhile, has suffered another key injury. A week after seeing senior Thomas Brown go down, the team has lost another running back in senior Kregg Lumpkin. The injury from the game at Vanderbilt is believed to be his left ankle and left knee. He may be done for the season. Georgia thinks there is a chance that Brown could return for the October 27th game against Florida.
There is sad news for the Georgia Bulldogs athletic family--former basketball standout in the late 80's, Alec Kessler has died at the age of 40. Kessler collapsed and died of an apparent heart attack Saturday in Pensacola, Florida. Kessler was a member of the Georgia team that won the only basketball SEC title in school history--1990. He was also a first-round NBA draft pick.

Georgia sports for Thursday, April 26
In Georgia sports,
The Braves had the stunning come-from-ahead loss last night in Miami to wrap their 3-game series, losing 4-3 to the Marlins. Leading 3-0 into the bottom of the 9th inning, the Marlins scored 4 runs off starter Tim Hudson and closer Bob Wickman.
Before that point, Hudson had been terrific, posting a career-high 12 strikeouts in trying to get the complete game.
The Braves’ offense came from solo home runs off the bats of Kelly Johnson, Chipper Jones, and Matt Diaz.
The Braves are off today, they start a weekend series in Colorado Friday.
A second Georgia Tech basketball freshman will enter the NBA Draft. Javaris Crittenton announced yesterday he will put his name into the ring, but not hire an agent. That allows him the option of returning to Georgia Tech. Crittenton follows the lead of fellow teammate Thaddeus Young, who also entered his name for the draft. Young also declined to hire an agent for now.
Both have until June 18th to withdraw from the draft to retain college eligibility. Crittenton and Young both tied for the team lead in scoring last season, with 14.4 points a game for the Yellow Jackets.
The NFL Draft is this weekend. The Atlanta Falcons have 10 picks overall—seven in the 1st four rounds. Their first is at number-8 overall.

Georgia Beats Hawaii 41-10 in Sugar Bowl

Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno (24) scores his first touchdown of the game during the first quarter of the Sugar Bowl football game against Hawaii at the Superdome, in New Orleans, Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2008. (Charlie Riedel/AP)
On Georgia’s first possession of the Sugar Bowl, Bulldogs tailback Knowshon Moreno danced 17 yards, untouched, into the end zone. He celebrated by blowing a kiss to Georgia fans.
He might as well have kissed Hawaii and its undefeated season good night. No. 4 Georgia ran over No. 10 Hawaii on Tuesday night, 41-10, to win its seventh consecutive game and finish the season 11-2.
Georgia welcomed Hawaii to the BCS by giving the Warriors a heaping helping of SEC speed and power. Knowshon Moreno ran for touchdowns on Georgia's first two possessions and the Bulldogs took a 14-3 lead on Hawaii after the first quarter of the Sugar Bowl on Tuesday night.
After beating up on unbeaten Hawaii, the Georgia Bulldogs sounded a bit miffed about getting passed over for a shot at the national championship.
Patience, guys.
Next season could be your year.
Showing off a dazzling array of young talent Tuesday night, fourth-ranked Georgia closed its comeback of a season with a dominating 41-10 rout of Colt Brennan and the BCS-crashing Warriors.
At every turn, a freshman or sophomore made a huge play for the Bulldogs, be it Knowshon Moreno (two touchdown runs), Rennie Curran (two sacks), Matthew Stafford (a TD pass) or Asher Allen (nine tackles, two interceptions).
While Florida and Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow are the early favorites for next season, keep an eye on the Gators' Southeastern Conference rival. The Bulldogs certainly provided a tantalizing glimpse of their 2008 potential against Hawaii, which came in seeking perfection and left thoroughly whipped.
"It was the fastest team I've probably ever seen," said Warriors quarterback Colt Brennan, a Heisman finalist whose college career ended with a thud.Georgia coach Mark Richt wasn't about to make any bold predictions, but he conceded the obvious.
"We're going to return a very good football team," he said. "We'll be more of a veteran team than we've had in a while. We'll have some good depth. We'll have a chance to make a run at it. But so do about six or seven others in our league."Georgia closed the season with seven straight wins after a sluggish start, the last of them on the very same field where Ohio State will meet LSU in the national title game next Monday.

Georgia sports for Monday, September 15th
The Falcons suffered their first loss of the season, falling 24-9 on the road at Tampa Bay Sunday afternoon. The Buccaneers built a 17-0 lead in the game, helped by a pair of interceptions thrown by Falcons' rookie quarterback Matt Ryan. After a tough 1st-half passing in which he went 3-for-15, Ryan rebounded with his 2nd-half passing numbers: 10-for-18. Tampa was able to stifle the Atlanta-running attack, holding Michael Turner to only 42 yards. A week ago, Turner set an Atlanta single-game rushing mark with 220 yards. The Falcons are 1-1 through 2 games--they'll host Kansas City next Sunday.
**Breaking--Monday morning: Falcons' veteran safety Lawyer Malloy was booked on charges of DUI and speeding early Monday morning. According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Malloy was booked into the Gwinnett County jail around 4:30 this morning. He reportedly posted bond in the 9am hour. Falcons' head coach Mike Smith is expected to address the situation in his regularly scheduled afternoon news conference.
College football weekend--
The weekend past saw wins for Georgia and Georgia Southern, while Georgia Tech lost their game on the road. The Georgia Bulldogs did enough to win 14-7 at South Carolina in the SEC-opener for both schools. Depsite the victory to improve to 3-0, Georgia fell to a #3 national ranking.
In other games, Georgia Tech was a 20-17 loser on the road at Virginia Tech. The Yellow Jackets suffered their first defeat under head coach Paul Johnson to drop their record to 2-1. Georgia Southern improved their early-season record to 2-1 with a win over Northeastern in Statesboro Saturday.
Atlanta Braves--
The Braves completed their weekend in New York with a comeback 7-4 win over the Mets Sunday afternoon. Trailing 4-2 in the 9th inning, Greg Norton blasted a 3-run homer to turn the game, stunning the Mets. The series marked the Braves' last visit to Shea Stadium.

Lawmaker wants tighter controls for sports regulatory commission
Events like boxing and ultimate fighting matches can bring in big money to the state. Those and other sporting events are regulated by the Georgia Athletic and Entertainment Commission. It oversees the integrity of sports for fans, and safety for its participants.
Republican state senator Eric Johnson of Savannah calls the current laws the Commission has to work with “vague and ambiguous”. Because of that, he says some promoters of big events have bypassed Georgia—taking money with them.
Johnson hopes to change that with new legislation.
"One of the goals is economic development. One of the reasons I'm interested in it is Savannah has a great boxing history and good boxing enviroment, and we want to make sure we can get some of the fights all over Georgia. Augusta is the same way...it has a great boxing history. And of course we've got the former heavyweight champion living in Atlanta".
The World Wrestling Entertainment organization says it would consider leaving Georgia with tighter regulations. They’ve operated under a special exemption since July 2005.

Georgia sports in the news ....
Two UGA golfers advance in tourney .....
A couple of University of Georgia golfers, Adam Mitchell and Patrick Reed, have advanced to the semifinals of the U.S. Amateur golf tournament, in Pinehurst, North Carolina. Mitchell rallied to defeat Charlie Holland 2 and 1 in one quarterfinal, and Reed defeated Graham Hill 4 and 3 to reach a semifinal matchup against 18-year-old Danny Lee. Lee, who hasn't needed more than 15 holes to win any of his four match-play rounds, beat Morgan Hoffmann 4 and 3. Mitchell will face Florida State's Drew Kittleson, who defeated former Louisville player Derek Fathauer 3 and 2. The semifinal winners will square off in a 36-hole final on Sunday at Pinehurst's renowned No. 2 course, which is playing at par 70. Mitchell, a senior at Georgia, trailed Holland by two before
winning three straight on Nos. 7-9 to take the lead for good. His 40-yard chip-in on the seventh started the decisive string. Reed is an 18-year-old Georgia freshman who barely advanced out of stroke play with a 4-over 144 and needed 23 holes to escape the third round. This time, he trailed Hill after one before overtaking him for good with a birdie on the par-5 fourth.
And, in Georgia football ....
Georgia is Number 1 in the nation, but quarterback Matthew Stafford has been no better than Number 2 in the Southeastern Conference, where Heisman Trophy winner Tim Tebow returns at Florida. Stafford has been working to change the pecking order of top SEC quarterbacks this season. Evidence of his commitment can be seen in his leaner body and more focused approach, and his teammates have noticed. Stafford no longer is thought of as the new kid in town. Instead, the junior is the Bulldogs' new leader. It's a role he seems eager to embrace, and it's a role his teammates are glad to see him assume. In a way, this has been Stafford's team since the midpoint of his 2006 freshman season, when he took the starting job for good. But as Stafford learned and earned the respect of teammates, other more experienced players, including running back Thomas Brown and offensive lineman Fernando Velasco, held leadership roles. Now it's Stafford's turn. He's a veteran of 21 starts and says he is ready to guide the team through a season of unprecedented expectations. Georgia, which finished No. 2 in last year's final poll, is No. 1 in the preseason polls for the first time. That brings new attention and responsibility to Stafford, and senior receiver Mohammed Massaquoi says the big quarterback is ready for the big challenge.

Dawgs wreck Tech, 31-17

Georgia Tech quarterback Taylor Bennett (13) is sacked by Georgia's Dannell Ellerbe (33) and Geno Atkins during the second quarter of a football game in Atlanta, Saturday, Nov. 24, 2007. (AP Photo/John Bazemore)
Georgia won't get a chance to play for the Southeastern Conference championship. At least the Bulldogs still have their state title. Matthew Stafford ran for one touchdown and threw for another, Thomas Brown rushed for 139 yards, and No. 6 Georgia seemed to catch every break in stretching its winning streak to seven in a row over Georgia Tech with a 31-17 victory Saturday.
Late in the third quarter, the Bulldogs (10-2) learned their hopes of winning the SEC East ended when Tennessee defeated Kentucky 52-50 in a four-overtime thriller. Both Georgia and the Vols have 6-2 records in the conference, but Tennessee won the tiebreaker with its 35-14 victory over the Bulldogs in early October.
Georgia Tech (7-5) hasn't beaten Georgia since 2000, and there's plenty of speculation that this latest loss could cost coach Chan Gailey his job. He dropped to 0-6 against the Yellow Jackets' biggest rival, and athletic director Dan Radakovich has said he'll evaluate the program after the season.
Stafford caught Georgia Tech off guard by running for a 31-yard touchdown in the second quarter, one of four lead changes in the first half. The last of those came with 1:02 left in the second quarter, when Stafford hooked up with Mohamed Massaquoi on a 9-yard touchdown that sent the Bulldogs to the locker room up 16-14.
There would be no more lead changes. Brannan Southerland powered over from the 3 after Stafford threw 55 yards to Sean Bailey. Brown finished off the Yellow Jackets with a 32-yard run down the right sideline with just over 11 minutes left.
A 2-point conversion provided the final margin, the first time in four years the game wasn't decided in the closing minutes.

The college football weekend included wins for Georgia and Georgia Southern, while Georgia Tech lost their showdown with Boston College. Tech's Yellow Jackets were dominated 24-10 in Atlanta Saturday night. Now with a 2-1 record, the loss dropped Tech from the top-25 rankings. Georgia's Bulldogs got back on the winning track with an easy 45-16 win over Western Carolina Saturday in Athens. Georgia's record is now 2-1. For the Eagles of Georgia Southern, they are off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2001, following their win at Coastal Carolina, 42-34.
From baseball, the Braves blanked the Nationals 3-0 Sunday afternoon in action from Washington D-C. Tim Hudson posted the first complete game for a Braves starting pitcher this season. He scattered 7 hits and recorded 6 strikeouts in the 9-inning effort. The Braves-offense included Mark Teixeira's 2-RBI single, and a Kelly Johnson solo home run. The Braves won 2-of-3 games in D-C, and finished the road trip going 3-3. In the race for the National League wild card playoff spot, the Braves remain 5-and-a-half games behind leader San Diego. The weekend saw wins for both Georgia and Georgia Tech. Georgia's Bulldogs scored the 27-10 win on the road at Arizona State. Georgia built a 21-3 halftime lead on the way to improving to 4-0 on the season. The Bulldogs maintain their #3 national ranking.

Georgia sports for Thursday, May 24th
The Braves lost to the Mets 3-0 at Turner Field in Atlanta last night. Once again, the Braves were not able to solve Mets-starter Oliver Perez: he allowed only 4 hits in 7 scoreless innings of work, and beat Atlanta for a third time this season. Chuck James took the pitching loss for the Braves.
The teams have split the first 2 games of the series, with the finale tonight. Again, it will be a battle of former teammates likely headed to the Hall of Fame: John Smoltz and Tom Glavine. The Braves won both previous games this season in matchups of the two. Smoltz is going for career win number-200. Glavine is 5 wins away from hitting 300 for his career.
From the college baseball conference tournaments on Wednesday, it was victory for Georgia Tech, while Georgia Southern and Georgia State lost their games.
Georgia Tech's Yellow Jackets beat North Carolina 8-4 in the ACC Tournament in Jacksonville. Tech will face Virginia today at 4pm. From the Southern Conference tourney in Charleston, a loss for Georgia Southern's Eagles to Elon on Wednesday, 14-7. The Eagles take-on Western Carolina today at 12:45, needing a win to move on.
