Georgia sports for Tuesday, July 22nd

Atlanta Braves--

The Braves hope last night's win at Florida is the start of a winning road trip and keeps the club in the mix for a postseason run. The Braves blanked the Marlins 4-0 in the series-opener from Miami, behind the strong pitching of rookie Jorge Campillo. He tossed 7 innings with only 2 hits allowed to earn his 5th win of the season. Offensively, Mark Teixeira and Mark Kotsay each delievered a pair of hits and an RBI.
The Braves moved to within 6 games of 1st place in the NL-East division.

Georgia State football--

Georgia State head football coach Bill Curry announced his first round of coaching staff hirings. George Pugh was named assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator. Pugh brings experience of helping to build a new program at Alabama-Birmingham a few years back. John Bond was hired as offensive coordinator. He held the same post last season with Georgia Tech, and brings a 25-year coaching resume to Georgia State. The defensive coordinator position was filled by John Thompson, who worked with Curry while both were on the staff of the University of Alabama years ago. Mike Riddle was hired as Georgia State's football operations director. Riddle was a walk-on player when Curry was head coach at Kentucky.

Georgia sports for Friday, June 13th

Atlanta Braves--

The Braves went winless in 3 games from Chicago, falling Thursday afternoon to the Cubs 3-2 in 11 innings. The Braves overall have now dropped 6-straight games. Leading 2-1 in the bottom of the 9th, Braves-reliever Blaine Boyer gave-up the tying home run. Into the last of the 11th inning, reliever Jeff Ridgway hit Chicago pinch-hitter Reed Johnson with the bases loaded to bring home the winning run. The Braves missed plenty of scoring chances in the contest, including wasting a bases-loaded/no-out chance in the 8th inning. The Braves' scoring came courtesy of Jeff Francouer's 2-run homer. The Braves tonight start a weekend series in California, against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

GSU football coach--

Georgia State University introduced its first head coach Thursday afternoon. Bill Curry will take the reigns as the downtown Atlanta school begins its football program, fielding a team to start play in the fall of 2010. Curry signed a 5-year contract.

Georgia/College World Series--

The Georgia Bulldogs are in Omaha, Nebraska getting set for their opening game in the 8-team College World Series field. Georgia is here for a third time in the last 5 years. They'll face top-ranked Miami tomorrow night at 7pm.

Georgia sports for Thursday, February 28th

The Atlanta Braves open their Grapefruit League preseason schedule this afternoon against the Los Angeles Dodgers in Vero Beach, Florida. Tim Hudson gets the pitching start as the Braves will face former teammate Andruw Jones. Yesterday, the Braves beat the University of Georgia's baseball team 8-0.

Men's college basketball out of last night: Georgia Tech lost their ACC-contest on the road at 7th-ranked Duke, 71-58. The Yellow Jackets' record fell to 11-15 overall, and 4-8 in the conference. Georgia's Bulldogs also lost their game in Athens, 77-64 to Florida. Georgia fell to 12-14 overall, and 3-10 in the SEC. The story was better for Georgia State's men--a victory in Atlanta over Towson 79-63. State improved to 9-19, and 5-12 in the CAA.

Georgia sports for Thursday, February 21st

Wednesday night men's college basketball action inlcluded victory for Georgia Southern, and defeat for Georgia State. G-Southern's Eagles rolled over The Citadel in Statesboro, 98-68. The Eagles improved to 20-8, and 13-5 in the Southern Conference. On the opposite end of the spectrum, the Panthers of Georgia State lost their 19th game in 26 played this season--a 77-72 loss at UNC-Wilmington.

From pro basketball, the Atlanta Hawks lost their 6th straight game--2nd in a 5-game road trip--at Sacremento 119-107. The contest marked the quick return of guard Mike Bibby, who was just traded to Atlanta last week. Bibby against his old teammates scored 17 points.

Georgia sports for Thursday, February 14th

A sure sign of spring right around the corner is the reporting of baseball players for spring training. Atlanta Braves' pitchers and catchers are arriving in Orlando at their preseason training complex on the grounds of Disney. The first workout comes tomorrow, with position players officially reporting next week. One of the new faces showing up today is actually a familiar one to Braves-fans: Tom Glavine has returned to his original team, after five years with the New York Mets.

Men's college basketball Wednesday night had a win for Georgia, and loss for Georgia State. Georgia's Bulldogs scored a win at home in Athens to snap a 5-game skid, the final of 82-64 over South Carolina. The Panthers of Georgia State continue their tough season with a 51-48 loss to Delaware in Atlanta.

From pro basketball, the Atlanta Hawks dropped their 4th-straight game, 100-98 at Charlotte in overtime.

It was a win for the Atlanta Thrashers in pro hockey action, 3-2 in the shootout to top Washington.

Georgia sports for Thursday, Jan. 31st

Men's college basketball action last night included the Georgia Bulldogs falling on the road at South Carolina 62-56. Georgia's record fell to 11-7, 2-3 SEC.

Georgia State's men's team had a better evening, scoring its second-straight win with a 64-58 turnback of Drexel in Atlanta. Leonard Mendez scored 23 points for the winning Panthers.

From pro basketball, the Atlanta Hawks continued their struggles on the road, stumbling in Los Angeles against the Clippers 95-88.

Pro hockey action had the win for the Atlanta Thrashers at home, 4-1 over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Georgia sports for Thursday, January 17th

Men's college basketball from last night had action for Georgia, Georgia Tech, and Georgia Southern. Georgia's Bulldogs were 61-54 winners over Alabama in Athens. Billy Humphrey led Georgia with 13 points. The Bulldogs improved their record to 10-5 overall. It was oh-so-close for Georgia Tech on their home floor in Atlanta, as the Yellow Jackets fell to top-ranked North Carolina, 83-82. The Tar Heels at 18-0, are off to their best start since 1986. Georgia Tech's tough season continues as their record went to 7-9. Georgia State's club lost on the road to Drexel last night, 58-51.

In pro basketball, the Atlanta Hawks were beaten at Milwaukee, 87-80.

To the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons had a second meeting with Dallas offensive coordinator Jason Garrett for the Falcons' head coaching job.

Former Georgia Tech head football coach Chan Gailey has found employment. He's been hired by the NFL's Kansas City Chiefs as their offensive coordinator.

Georgia sports for Friday, January 11th

Women's college basketball from last night: 10th ranked Georgia at home in Athens, knocked-off Ole Miss 75-62. Megan Darrah led five Lady Bulldogs in double-figures scoring with 19 points. It was Georgia's opener in Southeastern Conference play.

From men's hoops, Georgia State on the road in the Colonial Athletic Association, lost at Virginia Commonwealth 49-47. Leonard Mendez led the Panthers with 18 points in his team's losing effort.

From pro hockey, the Atlanta Thrashers lost their game at home to the Florida Panthers last night, 3-2 in the shootout.

Georgia sports for Thursday, December 6th

In men's college basketball, Georgia Tech made the trip of only a couple of miles in Atlanta to Georgia State's arena for action last night. Tech's Yellow Jackets had to fight hard to fend-off the homestanding Panthers before winning 72-67. From a tied halftime score of 32, Georgia State scored the first 8 points of the 2nd half to grab the lead. It wasn't until 6:24 left in the contest did Tech regain the lead for good. Lewis Clinch of Tech led all scorers with 22 points. Leonard Mendez paced State with 20. The Yellow Jackets improved their record to 4-4, while the Panthers fell to 2-5.

From pro hockey, the Atlanta Thrashers got their record back to .500 for the season in the 4-3 win over the New York Islanders.

Out of baseball, former Braves' outfielder Andruw Jones appears close to finalizing a deal to join the Los Angeles Dodgers. The contract is reported to be for 36-million dollars over 2 years.

Georgia sports for Thursday, November 29th

Men’s college basketball action from last night: Georgia at home in Athens knocked-off Delaware St, 58-47. Guard Billy Humphrey scored 18 points, all coming off 3-point baskets. The Bulldogs improved to 4-1 on the young season. Ga State won their game on the road at Jacksonville, 65-60. Leonard Mendez scored 23 points.

There is news with Atlanta’s new WNBA franchise. Marynell Meadors was introduced as its first head coach. The 64-year-old has been in the league since its inception--as a coach, general manager and scout. It followed a run of 30 years as a college coach.

Georgia sports for Wednesday, November 21st

In men’s college basketball; Georgia at home in Athens last night took care of Elon College, 76-65. Guard Billy Humphrey returned from his brief team suspension to come off the bench and score 18 points.

The Georgia State men’s team lost on the road at Florida State, 78-48. The Panthers’ record fell to 0-3.

In pro basketball, the Atlanta Hawks were 95-83 losers at home to the San Antonio Spurs.

From the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons have had only 3 days between their last game, and preparing for the champion Indianapolis Colts tomorrow inside the Georgia Dome. Head coach Bobby Petrino announced that Joey Harrington returns to start at quarterback, as Byron Leftwich is re-injured. The team has also lost a couple of players for the remainder of the season. Defensive tackles Rod Coleman and Trey Lewis have been placed on injured reserve. Coleman is suffering from an injured hand and triceps. The rookie Lewis sustained a knee injury that requires surgery.




GPB News Team:
